Maestro Liutaio Matteo Mazzotti

Matteo Mazzotti was born in 1979. As a child, he showed a precocious interest in music, while, attending the workshop in Piacenza of his grandfather Oreste Mazzocchi, a well-known cabinet-maker, he had the opportunity to learn “how to work the wood”.

He attended the Istituto Liutario “A. Stradivari” in Cremona,when he was 15 for the complete study of 5 years where his teachers were master Massimo Negroni. Besides the violin class, he also took private lessons from professor Umberto Panichi in Piacenza, and learned from Bruce Carlson (teacher of the official masterclass for Lombardia in 1999) the style and secrets of ancient Italian violin masters.

In 2000, he got a degree as “Maestro Liutaio” with full mark. After that he worked at Master Massimo Negroni’s workshop, getting the opportunity to improve his knowledge of the Cremona classic stylistics as well as the hundred-year -old secrets of violin polishing.   He finally opened his own workshop in Piacenza where he lives.

Luthier’s Art of Cremona

Matteo Mazzotti manufactures his instruments according to the traditional technique of the well-know Luthier’s Art of Cremona (mod.Stradivari, Guarneri, Amati…) 

Aside of classical models, he loves to do ‘900 his region Emilian masters as Poggi, Pollastri, Fiorini…etc uses the internal mould allowing him to develop his creativity and his own personal style. A careful choice of seasoned top-quality materials (fir from Val di Fiemme, maple from the Balkans) together with the evaluation of each single instrument in terms of sound performance, and with the masterly polishing (using oil or mixed paints) developed and prepared by himself personally, make each of his instruments a “unique” piece, characterized by careful manufacture, perfect sound and valuable beauty.

International exhibitions

Matteo Mazzotti’s instruments have been displayed at the most important international exhibitions of string instruments such as: Mondomusica (Cremona), Musikmesse (Frankfurt), International Music Fair (Tokio) and all main Chinese expositions as Shaghai musik China and Beijing Palm Expo.

Customers and teaching

Among his customers, he counts leading instrument merchants professional musicians as well as students attending the conservatories from the U.S.A., New Zeland, Australia, Japan, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, Israel, Sweden, Germany, Holland, Portugal, Austria and almost all knowed world…

Matteo Mazzotti’s instruments are valued and honoured as original items of the Classic Luthier’s Art of Cremona.

The master repairs and restores stringed instruments in the Musical Conservatory “G.Nicolini” in Piacenza, and  teaches in several masterclass, to give his skills and secrets to correctly preserve the instruments.
